Project Motor Racing’s VR available in alpha form

VR has now been enabled in Project Motor Racing, with players able to test an alpha build of the feature on PC.

Project Motor Racing’s VR is, dare we say it, promising
  • PMR enables VR in alpha build
  • Partial support for VR headsets, bugs expected, PC-only

The one feature Project Motor Racing fans have been crying out for is one step closer, as VR support has been soft-launched in-game.

However, VR in PMR has been released as an alpha feature, and it requires some legwork to get up and running, with players told to expect bugs and performance issues.

The Traxion team recently sampled PMR’s work-in-progress VR mode at SimRacing Expo Charlotte (see video above), and were initially impressed with its performance, barring a few anomalies we’d expect in its nascent stages.

Understandably, developer Straight4 Studios is being conservative with its early expectations for VR in PMR, and is actively seeking feedback from the community.

To enable VR, players are advised to follow the instructions below, with known issues and workarounds also listed. For more information, players are encouraged to join the sim’s Discord channel.

PMR has also just released its new GT Icons DLC pack, adding new cars and one new track to the game. This marks legendary sim-racing physics guru Aristotelis Vasilakos‘s first vehicle-handling input in the game, with hopes high that he can transform the beleaguered title’s fortunes.

How to enable VR in Project Motor Racing

  • Edit your game.xml located at Documents > My Games > ProjectMotorRacing and add the following line below  <game>

<vr enabled=”true” overlayHeadLocked=”false”/>

  • Example:

<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”utf-8″ standalone=”no” ?>

<game>

    <vr enabled=”true” overlayHeadLocked=”false”/>

    <startMode>1</startMode>

    <language>-1</language>

  • Add the -vr command line to your Steam Launch Options (Steam > Library > Right-Click Project Motor Racing > Properties > Set Launch Options) – Note: Ignore this step if you’re not on steam.,
  • Grab a towel (you’re gonna need it),
  • Launch the game and question your life choices

Key Issues and Recommendations

  • VR functionality is mainly while in cockpit view. Outside of the car you’re basically just a floating, confused ghost.,
  • We strongly recommend mapping a convenient button to Reset Head Tracking in your control bindings.,
  • If the headset view appears misaligned or offset, navigate to Cockpit Setup > Seat, make a minor adjustment if necessary, and return to the active session to reset the position.,
  • Your feedback is essential to help us prioritize improvements. Please let us know:
  • Which VR features or settings you would like to see added in future updates,
  • Your experience with graphics settings, particularly Anti-Aliasing, resolution scaling, and any adjustments you found necessary for stable performance and visual quality

Known Issues

  • UI is not complete or final in VR,
  • No Screen Mirroring,
  • Blocky artifacts around headlights edges at night time,
  • Can see grass through the bottom of the car,
  • “Shimmering” effect, most notably on fences and trees.,
  • Colour imbalance depending on headset,
  • Loss of performance after pausing several times,
  • Rain appearing within the cockpit,
  • Frame skipping causing a momentary change of camera view or position,
  • Dehydration may occur after long periods of VR

Workarounds

  • Camera even after resetting seems out of position – Go to Cockpit Setup > Seat and then exit back to the session,
  • Dehydration – Drink more water

Software Compatibility

  • Virtual Desktop not compatible currently,
  • OpenXR Toolkit can lead to crashes, disable it for now.
