Italian studio 34BigThings, best known for the Redout series and, more recently, Carmageddon: Rogue Shift, has announced it will become an independent studio once again after splitting from Embracer Group. The privately owned studio will be led by its original co-founder, Giuseppe Enrico Franchi.
Founded in 2013, 34BigThings is Italy’s second-largest independent game developer. It was later acquired by Embracer Group in November 2020, which enabled the studio to expand to over 70 staff and work on established IPs such as Carmageddon.
“This provided us with invaluable structure and stability, while offering a first-hand look at the complexities of balancing internal development with external stakeholders,” Di Donato said in an announcement.

“By returning to a privately held, founder-owned structure, we are able to operate with greater focus and agility,” he continued.
“Returning to full independence gives us absolute autonomy to shape our structure, our projects, and our development approach. It’s refreshing to be steering our own ship once more.”
Furthermore, the Head of Studio revealed that the studio’s next title will be announced later this year.
While it’s not yet clear if its next project will be another driving game after this year’s release of Carmageddon: Rogue Shift, Di Donato teased it will be a “major title” based on “one of the most important, beloved and revered intellectual properties in the world.”
After that, another “major title” is slated for 2027, with “another groundbreaking project” set to follow in 2028.
