Project Motor Racing: Alpha VR Support, GT Icons Pack Now Available

The GT Icons Pack DLC for Project Motor Racing is now available - and the game will be discounted by 50% in the upcoming Steam Summer Sale.

Following the release of update 2.0.0.6 on June 22, the GT Icons Pack DLC for Project Motor Racing is now available, adding three classes and nine new cars to the game. There are also good news for those who haven't gotten the game yet, but are interested: PMR will be part of the Steam Summer Sale starting on June 25, and it will be 50% off during sale.

Since its difficult launch, PMR has seen a constant stream of updates, but the biggest news was certainly developer Straight4 Studios bringing Aris Vasilakos on board as Chief Creative Officer. The former member of Kunos Simulazioni has a plan to bring PMR up to its full potential - check out our interview with him below!

GT Icons Pack: Classic GTs & Sportscars

Meanwhile, the new DLC shows that a lack of interesting cars is not one of the problems PMR needs to fix. The new classes, GT60, GT70 and Sportscar 67 all feature classics that are indeed quite fun to chuck around.

The biggest oddball of the bunch has to be the Chaparral 2F in the Sportscar 67 class: The prototype was raced in the World Sportscar Championship and is notable for being one of the first-ever racing car to have active aerodynamics, the earlier 2C variant being the very first.

Like F1 cars would have a year later, the 2F had a rear wing mounted high above the car's rear, but unlike the F1 racers of 1968, this was movable from the cockpit. An extra pedal allowed the driver to reduce the wing angle on the straights for more top speed.

The Chaparral 2F stands out from the pack - quite literally, considering its towering rear wing.

This is reflected in PMR, too - you could use your clutch pedal to map the function if you have one, as the 2F featured a 3-speed automatic gearbox. However, this only works in PMR if you set the gearbox assist to automatic, and the downshifts from second to first gear are a bit rough, so expect the rear to come loose.

This could potentially be improved in future updates, as you will have to shift gears manually if the gearbox is set to manual indeed. In this case, it would be wiser to map the wing adjustment to a button on the steering wheel and to use the clutch for shifting gears for better stability.

VR Alpha Implementation Now On Board

As mentioned in our article covering the v2.0.0.6 patch notes, an early VR implementation is now available in PMR. According to the Straight4 newsletter, this came to be as Pimax stopped by the PMR booth at SimRacing Expo Charlotte, where both teams found VR to be working better than expected.

To enable VR, Straight4 suggests following these steps:

  • Edit your game.xmllocated at Documents > My Games > ProjectMotorRacing and add the following line below:
    • <game> vr enabled="true"
      overlayHeadLocked="false"/>
  • Example:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="no" ?
    <game>
    <vr enabled="true" overlayHeadLocked="false">
    <startMode>1</startMode>
    <language>-1</language>
  • Add the -vr command line to your Steam Launch Options (Steam > Library > Right-Click Project Motor Racing > Properties > Set Launch Options) - Note: Ignore this step if you're not on steam.
  • Grab a towel (you're gonna need it)
  • Launch the game and question your life choices

As it is an early implementation, expect to run into issues.
